It's not. Not even close. A part of "ugly" is waste. Take the average American trophy home, its scattered gables, clerestories, nooks, angled roofs that seem to imitate the Winchester Mystery House, and when it is complete, every proportion, ruined, all hope for taste lost, then we add the oversized stone tower for the front door.
That is uglier, but in the United States, where too much money meets too little taste, it can get even worse. It does. Every day. Our country. It defines what we look like, who we are culturally, to the rest of the world. Sad.
